Hidden Blessings

Yes, it’s Monday and yes, I’ll be giving you a great workout today. But before we get to that I want to give you a little something to think about.

I haven’t had the chance to connect with you since the major world events of last Friday. I have spent so much time this weekend thinking about the people impacted by the earthquake in Japan and the resulting tsunami. When these kinds of things happen, it puts so much into perspective for me. I can’t tell you how many times I have found myself being grateful for the most basic things this weekend. It’s so easy to forget how fragile life is until you see how much others around the world are suffering. I need to do a better job remembering this everyday.

Earthquakes have always really scared me. This is because I have always lived in Seattle where the threat of “the Big One” is constant. So, when I see other nations fall victims to this natural disaster I can help but think this will one day happen here. Read more »

Breakfast of Champions

Breakfast is so important for so many reasons. If you’re not a breakfast eater, consider how you can be creative about getting in just a little sumthin’ sumthin’ to kick off your day. Remember, you don’t have to eat “breakfast-y” foods for breakfast. There’s nothing wrong with eating chicken and broccoli for breakfast. Actually, a lot of trainers and uber fit people do just that.

If the idea of food first thing in the morning makes you wanna barf, keep it small: a piece of fruit and a few nuts, a piece of toast and nut butter, a bit of yogurt and granola.

Feel free to keep breakie really simple. It can certainly be a grab ‘n go kinda meal. Many of my clients kick of their morning with a LaraBar or Zing Bar as they drive to work. That’s just fine – a decent source of carbs and protein with no kitchen time can be the best answer of you don’t have a moment to spare in the morning.

Now, just so you know why you’re doing what you’re doing, you should be aware that breakfast is important, essential actually, for the following reasons: Read more »

30 Minute Cardio + Strength Workout

By |

There are many days when I work 12-14 hours. Some of those hours are 1:1 training sessions, some are Boot Camp hours and some are Fit Healthy Moms blogging hours. I know people think trainers have a ton of time to workout, but it’s not always true. Running three businesses leaves me limited time to workout in spite of all the hours I spend in the gym. I actually find myself jealous of my clients at times, when they are all done with their sweat for the day and I’m trying to figure out when I’ll squeeze mine in.

Sounds just like your life, huh?? Being pulled every which way and trying to find just a few moments to yourself. So, I always work really hard to maximize my workout time. You should too! I combine cardio and strength training whenever I can and keep everything pretty fast paced in order to get the best metabolic impact. Read more »

Not Your Mother’s Slaw

For What To Eat Wednesday I have another great recipe from Smitten Kitten: Cabbage and Lime Salad with Roasted Peanuts.

What I love about this recipe is it takes something I really don’t like (cole slaw) and makes it clean, healthy and YUMMY. I’ll be honest, cole slaw has always creeped me out a bit. I mean, it tends to be all runny and soupy. You put a pile on your plate and it starts to kinda leak milky/yellow/mayo all over the plate. Gross!

But, recently I’ve taken a liking to non-traditional slaws. You can pack ’em with healthy ingredients and dress ’em without the milk/mayo goop. So much better for you and no slaw leakage on your plate. The main ingredient in slaw is cabbage and most of us probably don’t get much cabbage in our diets. It is so much better than most of the lettuces, as it’s packed with vitamins/minerals. Also, it’s great roughage for ya (you know what I mean!) Plus, you can eat a TON of cabbage for very few calories. A whole head, yes, an entire head, has only 215 calories.

The only adjustment I would make to this recipe to make it a bit cleaner is sub olive oil for the peanut oil. Shouldn’t dramatically change the taste, but will give you the great benefits of heart healthy olive oil. Ok, here’s the link to your next super healthy, happy non-mayo-leaking salad!

Hope you love this one. Let me know!

Bittman Recipe: Smoky & Sweet Brown Rice Pilaf

By |

It’s What-To-Eat-Wednesday again!

This recipe was an easy pick for me. It’s clean. It’s easy. It has a decent amount of protein/fiber/healthy fats. Plus, I love anything that can be a full meal in one bowl. Yup, this recipe can be a full meal. But, feel free to add chicken or another veggie on the side. You can never have enough veggies, right?!

While this recipe is originally from Mark Bittman, New York Times Writer turned food blogger, my assistant, Brenda, decided to test drive it last week and post the play by play on her blog. You can click here to follow along.

Mark Bittman’s blog is fabulous. You can follow him and his amazing recipes here. I should note in his original of this recipe, he pointed out the benefit of adding wine time any recipe: “. . . any recipe that calls for ½ cup of wine leaves you with most of a bottle left for drinking, which is never a bad thing.” I love it! I think Mark and I could be great friends!

Ok friends, eat up and report back!
