Healthy Family Traditions

Campfire with my mother-in-law and sis-in-law

We spent this weekend with my husband’s family at Suttle Lake in Oregon. It was a great trip, full of fun and laughs and a fair amount of healthy habits. As we made our way through the weekend I started noting some of the healthy habits we were participating in:

*Long walks/hikes after breakfast
*Big family meals with a base of tons of fresh produce (salads, fruits, grilled veggies)
*Meals eaten family style and together, as a large group
*Family photo time – my mother-in-law passed around a bunch of old family photos and told us stories
*Family camp fire
*Food prep & clean up – quality time visiting with my sis-in-laws
*Fishing time
*Game time

When you think about healthy family habits, you probably think about trying to get your kids to eat vegetables. But do you also consider the health benefits of quality time spent together as a family – like some of the things listed above? Do you prep meals and clean up together? Do you set aside time for family activities together on a regular basis? Do you eat together, as a family, most nights?

How do you communicate as a family? Does this relate to your overall health? Families that spend more time in front of the TV (non-communicative, for the most part) not only lead a more sedentary life, but they are missing an opportunity to get to know each other, build a foundation of open communication and prioritize healthy habits – whether it’s physical or mental health habits.

All this is not to say we didn’t have moments of indulgence this weekend. There was amazing french toast, s’mores, afternoon naps, cocktails…. But the healthy habits balanced and, in some cases, outweighed the indulgences. The time spent together enjoying each other’s company was so refreshing and renewing – that impacts your HEALTH. It made me really think about how my husband and I will prioritize family time come October when we become a family of 3.

Healthy habits are not just about eating and exercise. Sure that is some of it. But there is so much more to being a family unit based in healthy choices and committed to a healthy lifestyle.

What are some of your family traditions that contribute to your family’s overall health?

Trimester Two: Vegas, Pee and Parkour

I can’t believe it’s time to sit down and write this post. I started thinking about this post three months ago, after completing my Trimester 1 “Report”. I knew there would be a follow up, but it seemed so far off – as have many things (everything?) with fertility and pregnancy has been for us.

Trimester 2 has been filled with just as much learning and change as trimester 1. There has been less vomiting – thank God – and much more peeing. Mostly in my pants. At inappropriate times.

Here’s are some Trimester 2 highlights Read more »

Transformation Contest WINNERS!

By |

We just completed our first 6 Week Transformation Contest here at Fit Healthy Moms. The moms in the contest used their choice of our award winning programs to get some truly amazing results in just a few weeks.

First off, I have to say CONGRATULATIONS to the 51 mamas who participated in this contest. In reality, you are all winners, because the true prize is the experience of living and learning as you change your lifestyle. It’s not easy. It’s a one-foot-in-front-of-the-other kinda effort. It takes time, patience, courage and major commitment. You should all feel very proud for taking this on.

Regardless of your results I’m proud of you for STARTING. Starting is the hardest part. That teeny, tiny moment where you begin is almost undetectable in time. But if you are committed to your start, you that moment becomes big. Many people clearly remember their first workout that changed their life – or their first healthy meal that changed the role of food in their life. It is all a big deal, worth noting, worth remembering and certainly worth celebrating.

I wish I could celerate each of you separately here and shower you with gifts. But we had to narrow it down to 3 moms. It was hard. Really hard. My biz partner and SuperMom Workouts co-creator, Steve, and I have been going back and forth trying to make the best decision. Thanks for making it really stressful for us, heehee……

So, without further ado, here are our winners Read more »

One of my favorite things about my “job” (I put it in quotes because it rarely feels like work) is hearing your stories of success.

As we get into the last few days of our first ever Transformation Contest, I’ve been hearing a lot of stories of success. Each of these stories makes me so proud and happy and EXCITED for each one of you.

I recently got an email from Transformation Mama, Cassandra, that made my day. It started with her sharing that she hadn’t really seen the scale move much in the last 6 Read more »

6 Carbs for Weight Loss

In the past few months, I’ve talked a lot the benefits of eating grain free or gluten free. Making this switch can be hard and overwhelming, to say the least.

A couple years ago, after having some food allergy testing done, I cut gluten, dairy, soy, eggs and peanuts out of my diet. All at once. It was REALLY hard. Being a super nerd, I was totally on top of it too – 100%. I didn’t touch any of these foods for about a year. Then I slowly started introducing some of them back in little by little over the course of another year. I brought back gluten and dairy about 20%, meaning I’d just have them a couple times a week. I stayed away from soy (since most of it is genetically modified) and eggs (since I seemed to have immediate and not-so-fun reactions when I tried to re-introduce them.) I’m just now, 3 years later, Read more »
