No Resolutions For Me.

By |

That’s right, I’m not making any resolutions. Because I’m perfect the way I am. Haha – kidding! I’m far from perfect. I just don’t like the idea of resolutions. Perhaps I’m jaded. I’ve been in too many gyms in January to see the masses come flooding in, only to be gone my mid-February, filled with frustration, regret and perhaps a few more donuts.

I do, however, really enjoy reflecting on the year past and the year ahead and setting goals and aspirations that will guide me to make each year a little better than the one before. In many cases, this means continuing habits and behaviors that keep me grounded. In some cases, this means a shift or change in behaviors and attitude to improve myself.

Yesterday, my friend, Angela, texted me at about 9:30am and asked if my husband and I wanted to join her and her husband to do the Polar Bear Plunge in Puget Sound. We were comfy cozy when the text came through and turned down the invitation. It was the couch vs freezing cold water and the couch won! But, ultimately, I lost. Last night we joined Angela and her husband for New Year’s dinner and I was really envious of their “Plunge”. It sounded like such an cleansing and impactful way to kick off 2012 and missing that opportunity immediately made me reflect on what I need to do in 2012.

So here are my aspirations for 2012:

Be more patient.

Be less perfectionistic.

Laugh more than cry.

Tell my husband I appreciate him more.

Call my mom more often.

Focus on gratitude everyday.

Give more to charity.

Be 90% gluten free.

Be more adventurous with vegetables and veggie recipes.

Eat less cheese.

Drink more water.

Limit wine to the weekends.

Stop coffee.

Start tea.

Get in 5-6 workouts a week (260-312 workouts for the year.)

Take my vitamins and supplements, especially fish oil, 6 days a week.

Floss 6 days a week.

Run the dog 3 days a week.

Work less on the weekends.

Play more all week long.

Do more things that scare me.

Be more spontaneous.

Be less rigid.

Write more thank you notes.

Spend less time on Facebook.

Spend more time in the real world with friends/family.

Create prenatal FHM program (almost done.)

Create Super Secret FHM Program #1 (January.)

Create Super Secret FHM Program #2 (January or February.)

Create Super Secret FHM Event (Spring.)

Run Super Secret FHM Contest (soon…..)

Give away more of my best workouts on FHM.

Help my Seattle Boot Campers to lose another 500+ pounds.

Win #1 Fitness Program for Moms in Seattle again.

Do more radio and TV interviews.

Inspire and be inspired daily.

I know that’s a fairly cliche way to end a list of aspirations. But, I’ve really come to see that the only thing that gets in my way of my goals is ME. If I look outside myself everyday, to folks around me (YOU!), it is a million times easier for me to be reminded that the sky really is the limit when it comes to my personal and professional goals. With every year, this becomes more clear. So every year, I will push a little harder and reach a little higher. In some cases that involves just getting out the door for a run. In other cases, it involves getting in a helicopter. Regardless, all of it makes life better.

Make sure you take some time this week to define what you want this year and how you’re going to get it. You’re only going to GET what you want if you KNOW what you want. From there it’s a matter of putting one foot in front of the other day after day.

IT IS YOUR DECISION, NOT YOUR CONDITION, THAT DETERMINES WHO YOU ARE.
