How to be THE BEST

Being THE BEST means something different to everyone. My best is different than your best. My best changes from day to day. Yours probably does too. For example, this week I’ve been sleeping horribly. As a result, my workouts have not been Full of Awesome. But my nutrition is way better than last week when I was traveling. Here’s my best for yesterday:

Sleep: 3.5 hours (not even kidding)
Exercise: 20 minutes of legs (where I felt like each leg weighed about 500 pounds, resulting in using lighter weight than normal – dangit!)
Food:
5am: PB & Strawberries on rice cakes
9am: Plain Greek Yogurt + grapes + Udi’s granola
12pm: Amy’s Gluten Free Burrito & kale salad
2pm: Black Bean & Corn & red pepper salsa + 7 chips
7pm: Sushi dinner
Water: 80 oz

Earlier this week I wrote about my Transformation Mamas kickin’ butt and losing some major pounds in their first week of the program. I had reports of moms losing 1.9 pounds, 2.7 pounds, 4.2 pounds, 5.6 pounds, 6.1 pounds…. All AWESOME numbers. But really these numbers are only meaningful to the person who stood on the scale. I’m willing to bet there were a number of Transformation Moms who didn’t lose any weight last week. These moms likely still felt like rock stars for getting in X number of workouts or cutting out Crap Food A, Crap Food B and Crap Food C from their diet. For those moms, their best is measured by making some serious changes that will impact their health and wellness (and very likely the scale, at some point!)

But it’s not just about the scale. Success comes in many forms. Aside from the number on the scale, here’s what I heard from moms after 1 week:

“My pants are falling down when I run.”
“I’m sleeping better.”
“I can’t believe how much more energy I have.”
“I feel so much better when I eat well.”
“I learned I’m more productive all day if I workout in the morning.”
“Vegetables are sooooo filling!”
“No Diet Coke for 1 week = huge victory!”
“My kids think I’m strong because they see me exercising.”
“I don’t have sugar cravings all day if I eat more protein at breakfast.”
“I pulled my belt in a notch this morning.”
“I feel much less bloated already. And I’m peeing all the time. I love it!”

Sure, the number on the scale is cool. If it’s moving in the right direction. And that can change from day to day. In fact, just having soy sauce (or any other highly salty food) can add three pounds to the scale in 24 hours. Not kidding…. Oh, and your period? That can can add a few pounds for a few days too. And we let ourselves become devastated and discouraged by this silly number, that is really meaningless when you just look at one or two isolated days.

When it comes to the scale, you’re looking for trends. You want to see it moving down over time, for most of you. But your body can completely change without the scale moving much at all. Take my scale, for example. It never moves more that a few pounds in one direction or the other. BUT, based on how much muscle I’m packin’, I can wear a range of 3 different clothing sizes. So I’ve had to train myself to LET GO of the scale and measure my success by my strength and endurance in my workouts, the food choices I make to feel good on a daily basis, the muscles I see in the mirror and the way my clothes fit me. These are all much bigger and better indicators of my health and fitness at any given time.

Being the best means doing what you CAN do everyday and being damn proud of that effort. That effort will take you here:

This is a place where the number on the scale does not matter – the transformation is very obvious. And, yes, she GAINED weight to get smaller and leaner.

This is success.

This is transformation.

Starting today, judge yourself on what you do (not what you don’t do) and the changes you see and feel (not the scale!) And, of course, always do your best.
