Low Cal Cocktails

By |

The trainer in me would like to recommend that your refrain from alcoholic drinks at all times as they are ful of empty calories. They can impact your metabolic rate. They dehydrate you (further stiffling your metabolism). And perhaps most importantly, a few drinks can completely shut off your ability to make healthy food choices (yes, that’s why Taco Bell sounds good only when under the influence.)

The fun loving human being in me knows that in spite of everything I mentioned above, you’ll probably induldge here and there over the summer, because, hey, it’s summer. You’re with friends. The sun is out. Life is good. Why not celebrate a little??

So if you’re going to indulge here are some tips. Yes, I’m giving you drinking tips. I feel like I should list drinking games below (beer pong anyone??)

1. Beer is going to be your fastest way to rack up calories. If you must drink beer, go with light beer choices.

2. Hard alcohol is your lowest calorie option. Bring on the vodka. At 60 calories a shot, it’s one of your lowest calorie drink choices. My favorite go-to 60 cal cocktail is vodka+club soda+fresh squeezed lime. This is the lowest calorie drink on the street! You can also add a splash of juice to this for a handful more calories.

3. Beware of mixers. Most of them are packed with sugar and calories. Even tonic!! Club soda is always your best bet (no calories!) If you need a splash of sweet, add a splash of fruit juice to the top of your drink.

4. Bubbly! Champagne is about 85 calories a glass. Any drink under 100 calories a serving is your friend (in moderation, of course.)

5. Drink water between each drink to keep you full so you don’t overload on party food. Also, this to take a break from drinking calories throughout your event.

6. Be cure to stock up on lean protein and veggies before you start drinking. You’ll be much less tempted to indulge in junk food AND you’ll likely drink less if you feel full.

Enjoy and be safe!
